Socialist Party Opposes Trump Administration's Anti-Immigrant Actions

passed by t he National Executive Committee

The Socialist Party USA calls for an end to increased border enforcement and raids perpetrated by the Trump administration against immigrant populations living and working in the United States. The party also opposes Donald Trump's executive order calling for an end to birthright citizenship, which has been a fundamental concept recognized by the U.S. Constitution for over 150 years.

Trump's efforts to rally Americans by demonizing immigrants is a clear and transparent attempt to project a definition of an ideal "American" centered around a white identity under attack from people of color. His frequent use of the term "invasion" when referring to border crossings - which are down from recent highs - is a disturbing hint of his plans to develop a security state to protect against a mythical invasion he is creating through his storytelling.

Trump has sent U.S. military personnel to the Mexican border in support of border enforcement. This is further evidence of his desire to create a military-backed security state fixated on the separation of citizens from non-citizens.

The Socialist Party believes that this type of discrimination and bigotry are tools used by the ruling class to divide, exploit, and abuse the working class. The Socialist Party's platform calls for equal rights for every resident of the United States regardless of legal status, opposes militarization of the border with Mexico, defends the rights of all immigrants to education, health care, and full civil rights, and calls for full citizenship rights for any individual who demonstrates six months of residency in the United States.

The Socialist Party platform calls for elimination of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and the police powers afforded to it. Although the passage of the Laken Riley Act has broadened the grounds under which an undocumented individual can be jailed or deported, ICE has been unfairly targeting individuals based on their immigration status since its creation. For decades both Democratic and Republican administrations have allocated an annual budget of over five billion dollars to ICE, funds that can and should be used to support a fair and humane immigration system.

The party continues to organize a political and electoral challenge to Trumpism and elected officials who legitimize and submit to it. The party also urges all Americans to participate in projects in their communities to protect immigrant communities from ICE crackdowns, educate immigrants on their rights, and expose government officials acting provocatively in support of an anti-immigrant agenda.
